During her time as a Business Technology Management Co-op student at the Ted Rogers School, Jathavi Shanmuganantham held the role as the Vice President of Finance for the Ted Rogers Students’ Society (TRSS) in her final year. Because of her experience with TRSS and the budget she managed, the New Democratic Party (NDP) asked her to step up in a big way.
Earlier this year, Shanmuganantham was approached to take on the roles of Chief Financial Officer for one of NDP’s Provincial teams – Scarborough Centre Riding Association and Treasurer for one of NDP’s Federal teams – Scarborough Centre Riding Association. Read what the recent graduate (BTM Co-op, 2022) had to say about her journey to get there:
What role did you have at TRSS?
I started my tenure within the TRSS as an Academic Associate that focused on hosting workshops/events which were academically beneficial to students. The following year, I was elected as the Business Technology Management Director and represented a few committees and student groups virtually. In my final year, I was elected as the Vice President of Finance and managed a $1.6 million budget in favour of the students, staff and faculty within the Ted Rogers School, and led the finances of 30 student groups under the society.
How did working with the NDP come about?
As my interest and knowledge in Finance increased, I took every opportunity that came my way. A candidate of the NDP, who was familiar with the work I was doing within/outside of TRSS, reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in joining the Scarborough Centre Provincial and Federal Riding Associations as the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, respectively.
This seemed to be a great opportunity for me, especially as I was to be graduating within a few months. I accepted the offer and joined the meeting in which I was elected as the CFO and Treasurer amongst other candidates. I was also told by my predecessor that I am the youngest CFO and Treasurer the Provincial and Federal Riding Associations have had in years.
What type of work do you do for the NDP?
Similar to what I was doing at TRSS, I’m responsible for managing and overlooking the finances of the Provincial and Federal Riding Associations. All payments are approved, processed and tracked on my end. As we’re nearing the end of the year, I’m currently assisting with the audit process and closing the books for the year.
What are your future plans with this experience you’ve gained?
Although my interests mainly lie within emerging technology, all of this experience would assist me in becoming a better leader and enhance my knowledge of various industries. I have always had an interest in challenging myself and trying new things, so this became an opportunity that allowed me to do just the same.
Anything else to add?
For the students of the Ted Rogers School, I would just advise you to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Our school provides various opportunities and they may become the most memorable experiences of your lifetime.
